What is hemp fabric and how is it made?
Hemp fabric is made from the outer fibers of the hemp plant. Once harvested, the plant is cut and laid in the field to allow the woody stems to break down naturally, a process known as retting. The fibers are then gathered, scutched to separate the inner stems from the outer fibers, spun into yarn and woven into fabric. This produces a strong, durable textile with a naturally textured appearance and a handle that softens over time.
